Every year, the cult of the Serpent calls upon the noble families of the Northern Cities to offer their eldest daughters as symbolic tribute in exchange for the titular ancient sorcerer’s protection.
Lady Juliette is a quiet but extremely devout worshipper whose family has only recently come into enough standing to be invited to participate. Juliette secretly covets the Serpent in a decidedly blasphemous way, and hopes to use the celebration as an opportunity impress him with her piety and dedication.
While traveling alongside her fellow "offerings", she comes to realize that the only way to show the Serpent the true depths of her devotion (and maybe hopefully ensnare his affections forever and evermore) is not to worship dutifully at his feet, but to meet him as an equal.
